Phuket Hidden Gems: Quiet Beaches, Old Town and the Traps That Cost Travellers Money
Phuket hidden gems 2026: quiet beaches, Old Phuket Town, Phang Nga Bay, the Similan season, the free TDAC and cheap airport transfers.…

There are plenty of things to do in Belgrade – but not all of them are worth it. So here is our honest list: what we saw ourselves, how much time you should allow and what you can safely skip.
Belgrade isn’t a city you tick off for its beauty. It’s loud, a bit raw and incredibly warm-hearted. The best moments come from walking, sitting and listening, less in front of individual buildings. We spent a long weekend there in February 2026. This list clearly separates what we saw ourselves from what we only list for orientation.

| Sight | Time needed (approx.) | Entrance / cost (approx., as of 2026) | Location | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kalemegdan Fortress | 2–3 hrs | park and fortress grounds free | centre, above the confluence of the Sava and the Danube | must-see |
| Skadarlija | 1.5–2 hrs (longer with dinner) | free entry, dinner for two approx. €25–35 with wine | approx. 1.5 km on foot from Kalemegdan | touristy, but good |
| Zemun (Gardoš Tower, quay) | 3–4 hrs incl. food | walk free, tower for a small fee | approx. 6–8 km from the centre, taxi approx. €3–5 | must-see |
| Splavovi (river clubs) | evening | depends on the club, check on site | banks of the Sava | summer: yes. Winter: quiet |
| Ada Ciganlija | 1–2 hrs (winter), full day (summer) | free | approx. 5 km from the centre | in February just a walk |
Times are guide values. Opening hours change with the seasons – check them shortly before your visit on each venue’s official website.
The fortress sits high above the confluence of the Sava and the Danube and costs nothing. A sprawling park, old walls and gates, and the view of the two rivers: for us it’s the most beautiful place in Belgrade. Best come at sunset. Then the water changes colour and the city grows quieter – at least by Belgrade standards.
Tip: allow more time than you think. The grounds are large, and the walk between the viewpoints is the real experience. In winter you’ll need warm shoes, because the wind whistles up there.
Skadarlija is the old artists’ quarter with cobblestones, kafanas and live music. It’s touristy – no surprise. Still, we liked it, because the music is real and the atmosphere doesn’t feel staged. Sit down in a kafana in the evening, order something Serbian and let yourself drift.
Honestly: prices are a little above the city average, and at some tables you notice that you’re a visitor. If you’d rather eat somewhere quieter, have dinner in Zemun and only come here for the music and atmosphere.
Zemun used to be a town of its own. Today it’s a district on the Danube with a different pace from the centre. We walked along the quay, visited the Gardoš Tower and ate in one of the fish restaurants. The tower gives you a view over the rooftops and the river, and the district itself invites you to stroll.
Food tip: the ćevapi at Walter in Zemun won us over. The ride from the centre by taxi or Yandex Go is short and costs about €3–5.
The splavovi are floating clubs and bars on the Sava. In summer they’re legendary – and that’s exactly when they’re one of the reasons to go to Belgrade. We were there in winter, when it’s quieter. The atmosphere by the water is still there, but you’ll find the big nightlife in the warmer months. If clubs are your thing, plan for May to September.
Ada Ciganlija is the peninsula on the Sava – a lake with a beach and green spaces in the middle of the city. In February you can only go for a walk there. It’s nice, but not worth a detour. In summer it’s a different story: then it’s a meeting point for locals.
For these places we only know the guidebook descriptions, so we hold back on judgements. Prices are guide values and should be checked in advance on the official websites.
From Vienna you drive about 6 hours via Hungary. The Horgoš border was straightforward for us in winter. Serbia is not in the EU, so check your government’s official travel advice before you leave for entry, documents and the security situation, and ask your rental company whether driving to Serbia is allowed and which papers you need. Sort out tolls and vignettes in advance too.
There are parking zones in the centre that you pay for by SMS. Your hotel or apartment can help with how it works. You don’t need a car in the city itself: taxis or Yandex Go cost about €3–5 within the city.
| Item | Price (approx., as of 2026) |
|---|---|
| Apartment in the centre | €40–60 per night |
| Dinner for two with wine | €25–35 |
| Coffee | approx. €1.50 |
| Taxi / Yandex Go in the city | €3–5 |
You pay in dinar. Cards work almost everywhere. Wise converts at the exchange rate without a mark-up.
Roaming costs extra in Serbia, because it isn’t part of the EU. Get an eSIM or a local SIM card.
Burek is for breakfast, ćevapi for lunch or dinner. Rakija is best kept for the evening.
Two full days are enough for the highlights: Kalemegdan and Skadarlija on day one, Zemun and an evening by the water on day two. What the city feels like is in our story Belgrade – cheap, loud, warm-hearted: our weekend on the Danube.
Kalemegdan Fortress above the confluence of the Sava and the Danube, the bohemian quarter of Skadarlija and Zemun with the Gardoš Tower and the Danube quay. In summer, add the splavovi and Ada Ciganlija.
Two full days are enough for the highlights; a long weekend fits well. If you plan museums, clubs and day trips, you can stay longer.
Belgrade is cheap. An apartment in the centre costs about €40–60 a night, dinner for two with wine about €25–35, a coffee about €1.50 (as of 2026). Taxis or Yandex Go within the city cost about €3–5.
Yes, access to the park and fortress grounds is free. It’s considered the best view in the city, especially at sunset.
By car it’s about 6 hours via Hungary, with the border at Horgoš. The drive was straightforward for us in winter. Current entry and safety information is in your government’s official travel advice.
Not in the city itself. Taxis or Yandex Go are cheap. If you arrive by car, you park in SMS zones in the centre – your hotel or apartment will help.
Cards work almost everywhere; the currency is the dinar. Wise converts without a mark-up. As for roaming: Serbia isn’t in the EU, so get an eSIM or a local SIM.
Summer is ideal for the splavovi and Ada Ciganlija. Kalemegdan, Skadarlija and Zemun work all year round; in winter the city is quieter.

Passend dazu:
Our verdict on things to do in Belgrade: plan less and take your time for the places you really like. It also pays to visit the most famous sights early in the morning or in the evening, because it is quieter then. You’ll find more places we have been to ourselves in our travel stories; general background on the city’s history is on Wikipedia.
