Iquitos: getting to the Amazon city with no road – lodges, wildlife, health and ayahuasca facts

Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon – travel guide

Quick answer: Iquitos in the Peruvian Amazon is listed by Guinness World Records as the largest city with no major road connection (around 430,000 people). You arrive by plane or boat only: the Lima – Iquitos flight takes about 1 h 50 min (LATAM, Sky Airline, Star Peru). The best time depends on what you want: high water (roughly December–May) for boat trips deep into flooded forest and pink river dolphins, low water (roughly June–November) for jungle walks and birdwatching. Health: yellow fever vaccination is recommended for the region; ask a doctor about malaria prevention before you go. Ayahuasca is recognised in Peru as traditional cultural heritage – but it carries serious health risks, and its active ingredient DMT is illegal in many countries, including Austria.

No highway, no motorway, no long-distance bus. On the way to Iquitos you look down on an endless green canopy cut by brown, looping rivers – until a city suddenly appears. Iquitos sits on the Amazon where the Nanay and Itaya rivers flow in, is the capital of the Loreto region and the starting point for almost every trip into northern Peru’s rainforest. A road does run to the small town of Nauta, but Iquitos is not connected to the rest of Peru’s road network.

This is a carefully researched planning guide, updated on 01.11.2026 – not a travel diary. It covers how to get there, where to stay, jungle lodges, ethical wildlife watching, the best season, health – and an honest, safety-first section on ayahuasca, because you cannot avoid the topic in Iquitos.

How to get to Iquitos: flying from Lima

Iquitos airport is Coronel FAP Francisco Secada Vignetta (IQT), about 20 minutes from the city; mototaxis and taxis wait outside. Current route data lists these non-stop flights:

RouteAirlinesFlight time
Lima (LIM) – IquitosLATAM, Sky Airline, Star Peruapprox. 1 h 50 min
Pucallpa (PCL) – IquitosStar Peruapprox. 1 h
Tarapoto (TPP) – IquitosStar Peruapprox. 1 h

There are no international flights into Iquitos, so you will connect in Lima. From Europe that usually means a change in a hub such as Madrid or Amsterdam first. Leave a generous buffer between your long-haul arrival and the domestic flight, or sleep one night in Lima – delays are common and a missed separate ticket is expensive. Flight search engines show Lima–Iquitos deals from around US$50 one way; holiday periods cost much more.

The slow way: by river boat

With time and a sense of adventure, you can arrive on a cargo boat, for example from Yurimaguas. Depending on the route, trips take from about 19 hours to several days, usually sleeping in a hammock on deck. Lock up valuables, bring water and insect repellent, and expect flexible departure times.

Iquitos itself

Around 1900 the rubber boom made Iquitos rich, and some houses still show off tiles imported from Europe. In the evening families stroll along the riverside Malecón, while hundreds of mototaxis buzz around the Plaza de Armas. The market district of Belén, partly built on stilts, is fascinating and chaotic – go with a local guide and leave valuables behind.

Where to stay in Iquitos: city or jungle?

Most visitors combine both: a night or two in town before and after, plus several nights at a rainforest lodge.

Amazon lodges: what packages cost

Animal rescue centres worth visiting

Please note: holding, stroking or taking selfies with wild animals harms them, even where some places allow it. Avoid stalls and boats offering sloths or monkeys “for a photo” – these animals often come from illegal trade.

Best time to visit Iquitos

It is warm and humid all year (mostly 21–32 °C) and it rains in every month. What changes is the water level – rivers can rise by about 7.5 metres.

SeasonMonths (approx.)ProsCons
High waterDecember – May (peak in May)boats glide into flooded forest; dolphins, monkeys and sloths often easier to seemany trails underwater
Low waterJune – November (August driest)jungle hikes, sandbanks, best birding, piranha fishingsome side channels not navigable

Lodges fill up over Christmas and New Year, in March and from June to August. On 24 June Iquitos celebrates the San Juan festival.

Health: yellow fever, malaria and mosquitoes

Ayahuasca in Iquitos: the facts, safety first

In Iquitos ayahuasca is everywhere – posters, hostel noticeboards, touts in the street. So here are the facts, without hype.

What ayahuasca is

Ayahuasca is a traditional plant brew from the Amazon, used in ceremonies by Indigenous and mestizo healers. It contains the psychedelic compound DMT together with substances that block the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO inhibitors). That combination is what makes it active – and what makes many drug interactions dangerous.

Serious health risks

The media have repeatedly reported deaths and serious emergencies at ceremonies in South America. Medical questions belong with a doctor before you travel – not with the provider.

Rogue providers and abuse

High demand attracts people with no background at all. Sexual abuse by self-styled shamans has been documented, and the Chacruna Institute has published a dedicated awareness guide. Red flags:

Signs of a more responsible centre

Our honest advice: if you have health risks, take medication or feel unsure, don’t do it. The Amazon – dolphins at dusk, sloths in the canopy, nights full of jungle sounds – is a once-in-a-lifetime experience without any ceremony.

Money, entry and safety

Money: Peru uses the sol. Cards work in many city businesses, but boats, mototaxis and jungle villages need cash. Decline the conversion into your home currency at ATMs. How to pay and withdraw abroad without hidden fees is explained on sendwatan.com and in Money abroad.

Entry: rules depend on your passport. Austrian citizens, for example, need no visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days; the passport must be valid for at least 6 months on arrival and an onward ticket may be requested. The stay you are actually granted can be shorter – check it on arrival.

Safety: Austria’s automobile club ÖAMTC lists Peru at security level 2 (security risk). Register with your foreign ministry if it offers a service. Internet in the rainforest is patchy – see Starlink on the road.
