Palenque, Chiapas: how to get there – airports, Tren Maya, tickets and waterfalls 2026

Palenque, Chiapas – how to get there

Quick answer: The Maya city of Palenque sits in the rainforest of northern Chiapas. The closest airport is Palenque (PQM), which route data currently shows served only by Mexicana de Aviación from Mexico City’s AIFA airport. Most travellers fly into Villahermosa (VSA) instead and continue for roughly 2 to 2.5 hours by ADO bus. The Tren Maya terminates in Palenque and links it with Campeche, Mérida and Cancún. Ruins entry in 2026: 210 pesos INAH plus 215 pesos national park fee for foreign visitors, open daily 8 am to 5 pm (last entry 4 pm). Best season: December to April.

Temples rising out of the jungle, howler monkeys calling through the morning mist and a royal tomb hidden deep inside a pyramid: Palenque is one of Mexico’s most striking Maya sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Getting there takes more planning than a trip to Cancún or Tulum, though. So this guide focuses on exactly that – which airport to choose, how the bus and the Tren Maya work, what the ruins cost in 2026 and what to know about safety in Chiapas.

It is a carefully researched planning guide (as of 01.11.2026), not a travel diary. Where sources disagree, we say so and suggest you check locally or with the official source.

Flying to Palenque: the two airports

There are no direct flights from Europe to Chiapas. You connect via Mexico City or Cancún and continue from there. Two airports make sense for Palenque:

AirportNon-stop routes (per route data)Onward to Palenque
Palenque (PQM)Mexico City AIFA (NLU) with Mexicana de Aviacióna few kilometres by taxi; the Tren Maya station is about 3 km from the airport
Villahermosa (VSA)Mexico City (Aeroméxico, Viva Aerobus, Volaris), Cancún and Monterrey (Viva Aerobus), Mérida (Aerus, Viva Aerobus), Guadalajara and moreADO bus about 2 h 10 min, shared taxi or rental car

Flying straight into PQM: Mexicana de Aviación started the route from Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) in January 2024, and a June 2026 report still lists Palenque in its network. Frequencies change, so check the current schedule with the airline.

Via Villahermosa (VSA): more flights, more departure times and often lower fares. Depending on the source, Villahermosa is 140 to 165 km from Palenque. A booking platform lists ADO buses from Villahermosa airport to Palenque taking about 2 h 10 min. You can also take a taxi to the ADO terminal in the city, which has more departures.

Rental car: the drive from Villahermosa is straightforward, but in Chiapas only drive in daylight – Austria’s motoring club ÖAMTC advises the same (see safety below). Our take on the pros and cons is in Rental car or motorbike?, and you can compare offers on Discover Cars.

Getting to Palenque by ADO bus

ADO is the main long-distance bus company in southern Mexico. Its terminal is in Palenque town, about 8 km from the ruins. Guide values from travel platforms (late 2025 to March 2026):

RouteTravel timeDepartures / fare (guide)
Villahermosa – Palenqueabout 2 – 2.5 hmany departures daily
San Cristóbal de las Casas – Palenqueabout 5.5 – 6.5 haround 6:30 am, 1 pm, 7 pm and 11 pm; roughly 220 – 320 pesos
Mérida – Palenqueabout 8.5 – 9 haround 8:30 am, 10 pm and 10:45 pm; roughly 1,060 pesos

Schedules and fares change; current times and tickets are on ado.com.mx.

Tren Maya: Palenque is the end of the line

The Tren Maya has run to Palenque since 01.01.2024. The station stands on the grounds of the old airfield between town and Pakal Ná, so it is not in the centre. From here the line runs via Tenosique, Escárcega and Campeche to Teya-Mérida station (outside central Mérida) and on towards Cancún.

Buy tickets only through the official site, trenmaya.gob.mx, and its booking platform. Foreign visitors pay higher fares than locals, and timetables are adjusted regularly.

From town to the ruins

Colectivos (shared minibuses) marked “Ruinas” shuttle between Palenque town and the site. A travel guide updated in May 2026 puts the fare at about 25 pesos and the ride at around 20 minutes. The national park fee is collected at the park entrance, then you continue to the visitor centre.

Palenque ruins: tickets, hours and guides

ItemForeign visitors 2026Note

National park fee (CONANP)215 pesosresidents 110, students 55 pesos

These figures come from INAH’s page for the site and the 2026 fee list. Older blogs quote much lower prices from before the early-2026 increase. You pay at the visitor centre, and INAH says tickets are also sold online. Professional cameras cost extra; food and pets are not allowed.

What to see

Best time of day and guides

Arrive at opening time, 8 am. In April and May average highs reach around 35 °C, and tour groups from Villahermosa and San Cristóbal usually arrive later. Allow at least three to four hours, more with the museum. A guide is worth it: the inscriptions and the dynasty’s story are hard to read without context. Accredited guides carry an official ID – agree on price and duration first. Tours with flexible cancellation are also on GetYourGuide.

Misol-Ha and Agua Azul waterfalls

Misol-Ha is about 20 km from Palenque. The waterfall is more than 35 metres high; you can swim in the pool and follow a path behind the curtain of water to a small cave. A travel platform (March 2026) lists entry at about 30 pesos – check on site.

Agua Azul is about 63 km away on the road to Ocosingo and San Cristóbal. The water is typically turquoise from November to April; in the rainy season (roughly July to October) it turns brown or grey. The same platform lists entry at about 80 pesos. Tours combining both falls usually leave between 6 and 7 am and cost around 350 to 550 pesos.

Road and safety: Federal Highway 199 between Palenque, Ocosingo and San Cristóbal is a winding mountain road with many speed bumps. Road blockades (bloqueos) linked to local disputes happen repeatedly – in 2022, for example, tour buses were stuck during Holy Week. Our advice: travel only in daylight, ideally on an organised tour, ask about blockades before leaving and never try to drive through one. Please check the current situation locally.

Where to stay: El Panchán or town?

Find places on Airbnb or compare hotels on Booking.com; what we look for is in Booking Airbnb the right way. The dry season from November to April is high season – book early.

Mosquitoes and health

Is Chiapas safe?

Austria’s ÖAMTC rates Mexico overall at security level 2 (security risk). Rural areas of 19 states, Chiapas included, carry a partial warning at level 3 (high risk). Tourist zones and UNESCO World Heritage cities are exempt, and the ÖAMTC recommends arriving by air or by daylight on toll roads. The US State Department’s advisory (06.09.2024) says “Reconsider travel” for Chiapas and restricts its staff from travelling in the area along the Guatemalan border. Check your own government’s advice before you go.

Money and entry

Money: Mexico uses the peso. You need cash for colectivos, waterfall entry and small eateries, and you should always decline “pay in your home currency” at ATMs. How to avoid hidden fees abroad is explained on sendwatan.com; more in Money abroad.

Entry: rules depend on your nationality. Austrians, for example, need no visa for tourist stays of up to 180 days and a passport valid for at least 6 months on arrival, according to the ÖAMTC. The border officer decides how long you may stay and may ask for an onward ticket and proof of funds; adults use automated e-gates at Cancún and Mexico City airports.
